Public", described in an ''Oklahoman'' editorial as "bespectacled, mustachioed, fedora-wearing".〔(Goodbye, Jim: Our hats are off for 58-year cartoonist ), ''The Oklahoman'', April 19, 2009.〕 In 2006 the Oklahoma State Senate voted to make this character the "state's official editorial cartoon."〔(Mr. Voter Tapped by Senate as State’s Official Editorial Cartoon ), Oklahoma State Senate News, March 9, 2006 (retrieved May 25, 2009).〕
Lange was forced to retire in October 2008 after 150 members of staff took buyouts, retired early or were laid off.〔(After 58 years, Lange Takes 'Early' Retirement" ), ''AAEC Editorial Cartoon News'', December 5, 2008.〕 He retired after 58 years of service.〔(Jim Lange retires from Oklahoman after 58 years ) ''Daily Cartoonist'', October 10, 2008.〕 Lange died on April 16, 2009 at the age of 82.〔〔(Oklahoman Cartoonist Jim Lang Dies ) ''KRMG Local News''〕 He is survived by his wife and three children.
